With Clancy driving Sidney and her two escorts out to Newport Beach for the WAMPAS Baby Stars event, Junior drove himself to the studio. On his way to the main gate, he passed a row of billboards that lined the wall outside the studio. In an explosion of eye-catching words and colors, they brightly advertised the studio’s latest films. Junior smiled, proud of the studio’s current product, and his grin grew quite wider at the thought of the billboard for Frankenstein joining them.

Reaching the main gate, Junior began to turn, when suddenly he spotted a familiar car parked up ahead in front of the executive building.

It was his father’s limo.

A sense of dread washed over him. His father was at the studio. Now. A mere couple of hours before they were scheduled to shoot the test with Karloff. This was not good. Junior continued past his turn and instead pulled into the roundabout in front of the executive building. Junior was out the driver’s side door a split second after the car had come to a complete stop.

Racing inside, he rushed through the halls. Being Saturday, the building was mostly deserted, and his clattering feet went unnoticed, save for a few scattered members of the cleaning staff. Junior hurried through each department—Production, Publicity, Casting, Employees; they were all empty. He even tried his own office, but it too was empty.

“Darn it,” he said as he kicked the ground. Where was his father, and more importantly, why was he back at the studio today? Yesterday, he had walked around the studio before the banquet to check things out, so there really was no reason to return today.

Junior suddenly turned white.

Unless he somehow found out about the screen test. But how? It wasn’t possible. Junior had covered all his tracks and told as few people as possible, and none of them had any contact with his father. Still, the thought sent Junior into a panic. He rushed out of the building and hurried across the lot. Again, being the weekend, there was very little activity, and he made it quickly over to Stage 6, where they planned to shoot the screen test. But when he arrived, it was deserted. The skeleton crew that Junior had handpicked to cause the least amount of attention was not due to arrive for at least another hour.

Stymied, Junior briskly wandered, searching. Writers’ bungalows, dressing rooms, props, sets, Wardrobe, Editorial—he even checked a stretch of buildings that the family had lived in when visiting the studio before making the permanent move west and buying their own place. No sign of his father.

Additionally, nothing seemed out of order. Just a quiet Saturday at the studio. The calm before the storm that came every Monday morning when the studio would burst back to life, and dozens of productions would, in earnest, get back to the business of making movies. And this Monday, it would happen to include the very first day of production on Frankenstein. With this thought, Junior
