CHAPTER 13

THEO - 9 years ago

Dad drinks too much.

Instead of fighting with Mom the second he gets home from work, like he has since I can remember, he comes home and drowns himself in a bottle of whiskey.

I hate being home.

He’s so angry when he’s drunk. He doesn’t hit us, but he yells a lot. And Suzanne is only 13.

I try my best to distract her, take her away from home during the evenings. She tags along with me to Amanda’s a lot.

I’ve been spending a lot of time with Amanda, ever since the fourth of July I’ve given up trying to contact Polly, and I’ve given in to Amanda. She’s not nearly as obnoxious now that we’re together. She’s actually really sweet with Suzanne, and my friends like that we’re together. The sex with Amanda is always selfish on my part, she’s even started pointing it out recently, telling me I won’t look her in the eye, calling me out for never telling her I love her back, asking me to go down on her. I told her I’ll never do any of those things and I know it hurts her, but I don’t care.

She’s stuck around despite her complaints, which is good because she’s a good distraction.

Amanda gets my mind off of a lot of things.

Mostly Polly.

“You ready for the game tonight?” Tyler asks from next to me at the lunch table.

“Hell yeah,” I say. I rub Amanda’s back as she perches on my lap. She’s growing her hair out this year, it’s just past her shoulders now. I know she wants me to touch it. But it’s one of the other things with her I cannot bring myself to do.

She leans in and whispers in my ear “look, it’s the weirdo.”

My blood runs cold as I follow Amanda’s gaze across the lunchroom.

My eyes lock on Polly as soon as I see her. She’s looking as beautiful as ever, her long dark hair touches the tiny waistline of her pants as she throws her head back laughing at something Caleb just said. They’re with a group of friends I don’t recognize aside from Hilary, but it’s easy to see that he only has eyes for her.

He smiles down at her, like she’s the most precious thing in the world.

Because she is.

My heart aches.

“He’s in a band,” Ingrid says when she notices where we’re looking.

“He’s in band? That’s fitting.” Amanda snorts.

“No, he’s in a band, it’s cool. He plays guitar.” Ingrid says.

Amanda glares at her, “he’s a nerd.”

“Who?” Jake asks, looking around.

“Caleb Powell,” Cecily says and she points to where we’re all looking.

“The lacrosse middie?” Atticus asks finally looking up from his lunch tray.

“I guess,” Amanda scoffs, she leans back into me, resting her head on my shoulder.

“Caleb’s cool. He plays lacrosse and guitar like a beast, and he’s hilarious.” Hayes says.

“Not to mention, good looking.” Ingrid adds sighing.

Tyler throws me an apologetic glance.

It bothers me.

Caleb slings his arm around Polly and she turns to face him, looking up at him the way she used to look at me.
