Rachel pulled into the parking lot of the National Museum of Wildlife Art, wondering if sheâd ever really know what made little girls tick. Since Joy had first come to stay with her, Rachel had tried to interest the eight-year-old in going through the museum without success. Then two minutes ago they were driving down Highway 89 when the girl practically jumped out of her seat insisting she really, really, really wanted to stop.
âItâs a cool place.â Rachel stepped from the vehicle. âI think youâll likeââ
âCâmon,â Joy called, already halfway up the sidewalk. âLetâs get inside.â
Although the air held a bite, it wasnât that cold. Still Rachel hustled inside. Once sheâd paid for their admission, Joy grabbed her hand and pulled her along. âThereâs someone, ah, something we need to see.â
Rachel stopped, now thoroughly confused. âYouâve never been here. How do you even know what youâre looking for?â
Joy hesitated. âAddie comes here with her mom and dad all the time.â
Ah, now it made sense.
âHoney, just because Addie saw something here doesnât mean weâll be able to see it, too. They have what are called âtravelingâ exhibits thatââ
âIf I didnât know better Iâd think you two were following me.â
Rachelâs breath caught in her throat at the familiar baritone. She whirled. âDerek.â
Sheâd expected to see paintings and photographs and bronze sculptures in the beautiful building made of native rock. She hadnât expected to see him. For whatever reason, Joy didnât seem as surprised.
He rocked back on his heels looking incredibly appealing in his dark pants and a sweater. âWhat brings you here on a Thursday afternoon?â
After her conversation with her friends, Rachel had considered calling him, but that seemed more of a âI want a relationship with youâ than âI want to be friends.â Sheâd hoped theyâd run into each other. Now that they had, she wasnât going to blow the opportunity.
âJoy wanted to see an exhibit that Addie mentioned to her.â Rachel smiled warmly. She should tell him sheâd changed her mind. This was the opportunity. But the desire coursing through her veins at his nearness wasâ¦disturbing. The reaction seemed a little too strong for a friend.
Derek shifted his attention to Joy. âWhat exhibit did you come to see?â
The girl took a step to the side and pointed in no specific direction. âJust, ah, one back there. Iâll look for it while you and Rachel talk.â
She slipped past him and didnât stop or turn around even when Rachel called her name.
âKids.â Rachel shook her head and chuckled.
âItâs a great museum. I enjoyed going through it.â He glanced at his watch.
âAre you leaving?â She did her best to keep the disappointment from her voice.
âIâm skiing Snow King at one-thirty.â
âWith Travis?â
âActually a friend is in town for the day and wanted to get together.â His voice took on a teasing tone. âI do have more than one friend, you know.â
Rachel swallowed past the sudden lump in her throat. âBoyfriend? Or girlfriend?â
âMatt and I played ball together in college.â
Although she told herself it didnât matter, her knees went weak with relief.
