I will discuss our personal responsibility to the most vulnerable of society in the next chapters, but here the issue is the role of government in creating and maintaining an adequate safety net. This is a justice issue to God. Rulers, leaders, and judges have a responsibility before God to take up the cause of the poor, for usually those on the bottom shelves of society suffer the most. In our country, the fastest growing segment of the poor are children.18 Across our land, despite our wealth, 20 percent of our children live below the poverty line—struggling to gain adequate nutrition, health care, housing, and schooling.19 We tend to blame the poor for their poverty. Children cannot be blamed for their poverty. They just need help.

Faith-based organizations have traditionally taken the lead in such efforts, but our government cannot ignore broader structures and systems that punish the most vulnerable among us. It’s a justice issue. Does your candidate understand poverty issues? Will he or she work to strengthen the safety net that still contains too many holes?
