What’s the problem with online returns?

It’s easier than ever to send items back when you shop online—but your free returns aren’t free for the planet.

One of the most convenient aspects of online shopping is how easy it is to return things. For many of us, it’s become normal to order lots of items and send most of them back, with some shoppers making a habit of ordering items of clothing to wear once and return. In Australia, for instance, there are 2 million online purchase packages delivered every day; of those that contain clothing, one in three are returned. In some parts of the developed world, the return rate for clothes bought online is nearly 50%.

All those extra delivery vehicles on the roads, plus the large volume of packages being flown internationally, means a big increase in CO2 emissions. What’s more, many returned items are not resold, but sent straight to landfill—it’s often more profitable than going to the effort of repackaging them.

Reducing your impact means avoiding returns whenever you can. Buy items that have very high return rates, such as shoes, in a physical store, and make returning an item the exception, not the norm.
