Also in Mayo, near the southern border of the county, is a much overgrazed sessile oak and silver birch wood struggling to survive. The Erriff river valley wood at Erriff Bridge is almost certainly the last remnant of a once much more extensive forest, lining the mountain side. Despite those scanty remains, the drama of the wood is heightened by the nakedness of the surrounding landscape to the south, most of which is covered by blanket bog. A rehabilitation programme is under way: sheep have been fenced out and thousands of young sessile oaks have been planted by the owner of the wood, Coillte, with the encouragement and support of An Taisce (the National Trust for Ireland). The ground flora is poor at present as the sheep have grazed it for years. Bird life is diverse and includes the usual woodland species plus tree creepers and spotted flycatchers.

Tree lungwort, one of the most curious-looking of all woodland lichens (F. Guinness).
