This afternoon, I heard at 5th Army Headquarters that Col. Tucker and his men had regained their position on the heights commanding Altavilla; that the fall of the town seemed imminent; that there had been heavy enemy attacks; and that we had sustained some losses.
That is the traditional verbiage which is supposed to tell all about a battle, and actually conveys nothing. But I know what those words mean, in terms of blood and courage and the will to win. This—a battle for a nameless hill which commanded the small town of Altavilla—is the war we are fighting; and the total of all the courage and suffering, the total of the nameless hills and the small towns we are fighting to conquer, one by one, is the war in Italy and the war against Germany.
