A note on Exhaust Ports

One major point to remember is that most gas soldering irons have at least one exhaust port to vent hot gas out of the combustion chamber. That’s how burnt gas travels through the iron. This vent could be almost anywhere on the soldering tip or accessory, so you need to identify it and consider its proximity to nearby materials such as plastic or wiring that may be damaged accidentally by the hot exhaust gases.

^^ This gas iron has a single, built-in catalyst that cannot be replaced. A basic tip screws onto the end and the red-hot exhaust element can be seen glowing inside. Very hot exhaust gasses are vented from the port. Take care to prevent the hot exhaust from damaging materials.
