Eastern Ancestors of PIE

And what came before PIE? Clearly, PIE must itself have been descended from a still earlier ancestor, and so we might hope to go on finding ever more distant relatives for English somewhere on the globe. But this is hard. The further back in time we go, the greater the weight of accumulated changes we have to decipher, the fuzzier and blurrier becomes our picture of the linguistic facts, and the more distant and difficult to identify become any relatives that might be out there.

At present, no relatives for Indo-European have been identified. Several linguists have been intrigued by a possible link with the neighbouring Uralic family, which includes Finnish and Hungarian, among others.
