Chapter Thirteen

In September, the NFL season was in full swing, and the NBA preseason was also underway. Tatum was excluded from watch parties at Kelsea’s home this season, although she and Kelsea still followed each other on Instagram and TikTok. Now that Ariana had moved to Canada, and Tatum was no longer in the picture, Kelsea had befriended the girlfriend of a recently traded player to the New York City Flash. Tatum saw photos of Kelsea and the girl hanging out via IG, and they recorded fun and silly TikTok reels together. Kelsea was the only close friend Tatum made in New York City, and she felt the void of her desertion. She’d made one last attempt to extend an olive branch to Kelsea, but it was a stilted phone conversation full of awkward pauses. Finally, Kelsea came right out and told Tatum that she couldn’t support her staying married to a rapist.

“I know Antoine has not been a saint for the duration of our marriage, but he’s never been accused of anything of this magnitude.”

“Would you leave him if he had?” Tatum pressed.

“Look, Tatum, I don’t have time for this. This is not the time for hypotheticals.”

“The fact that you can’t give me a straight answer confirms to me that you don’t know what you’d do if Antoine was in that same situation, so how can you act so high and mighty and judge me and King?”

“I’m hanging up now. Besides, with your new massive social media following, you no longer need my friendship. Goodbye, Tatum.” With those last words, Kelsea hung up, officially solidifying the end of their friendship.

The only person Tatum could grieve the loss of her friend with was her mother, Vanessa.

“Trust me, Tatum, you’ll see that you’re better off without her in your life. And it sounds like she’s jealous of your newfound social media fame. She’s nothing but a housewife who lives in Antoine’s shadow while you’re carving out your own identity outside of King. Screw her and Antoine’s soon-to-be washed-up behind,” Vanessa said.

Tatum felt Gya could relate to the betrayal of a friend, as the reality show Sidepieces aired in mid-September. Tatum watched as Mercedes came on screen and boasted about how she’d first crossed paths with Bryant at Gya’s birthday party, which she attended with her cousin Christal who was once a friend of Gya’s. Of course, due to the gag order both Gya and Bryant enforced, she couldn’t mention either by name. She then detailed how Christal’s husband, Victor, Bryant’s fellow teammate, snuck her into their training camp and brought her to Bryant’s room.

“We were just sitting on the bed talking, making casual conversation, and that’s when I made my move,” Mercedes said. Despite a few lingering post-pregnancy pounds, Tatum had to admit that Mercedes was an attractive woman. She exuded sex appeal as opposed to Gya’s girl-next-door beauty. Tatum figured this was what drew Bryant in, yet she was disgusted at Mercedes’ boldness in describing her seduction of him to the world.
