As soon as the table had been cleared, Cannibal wandered off, presumably back to his bedroom. I didn't think too much of it as I figured men had been retreating from kitchen duty since the beginning of time.

He returned with a red velvet pouch in his hand, which he held out to his mother. "Happy birthday, Mom."

Her gaze flicked down to the item, back to him, then to the present once more. "Is this…"

"Open it." His softly spoken words were filled with adoration, love, and a hint of pride.

She did so, plucking out the huge red ruby into her palm. The same one I'd seen yesterday when Cannibal opened the hidden safe in the wall and revealed the gorgeous jewel.

Her eyes welled up. "Byron. This is too much. It's your treasure."

He pulled her into a hug, set her back, then kissed her cheek. "It suits you much better." He offered up a smile.

She wiped at her eyes and drew him into a tight hug. "Thank you, son."

I watched him embrace her, saw the unspoken feelings portrayed in Cannibal's actions, and grinned to myself. He might be hard as steel on the outside, but underneath, he was a marshmallow with those he cared for. I thought once again about Shy and how tenderly he treated her. Envy washed over me. Maybe, just maybe, I could join that exclusive club one day.

Everyone oohed and awed over the piece before Gloriana left to find a safe place for her newest bauble.

Rikard slapped Cannibal on the back. "Having you here was enough of a present for her. But, that was something she'll remember forever."

Cannibal inclined his head at the praise.

"You never told me, what is it you do in the city?"

"I'm an Enforcer," Cannibal answered blandly.

Rikard tilted his head slightly. "What's an Enforcer?"

"I'm one of a large group that works to ensure peace between the species."

"You're a police officer?"

Cannibal's jaw ticked. "No. The police take care of regular crime. I intervene when the crimes are against other species."

"He puts his life on the line in order to protect every species—human, vampire, and shifter alike—from crazies out to eradicate or harm them. Cannibal patrols the streets, keeps his ear to the ground, and goes to battle quite often. He's the best Enforcer the company has, is feared by nearly everyone, and always wins," I answered for Cannibal. He wouldn't trumpet his own horn, but I would.

"Damn," Titus added. Respect showed in his face.

Rikard arched an eyebrow. "Is that all true?"

"Yeah."

Rikard met Cannibal's eyes. "I'm proud of you, son. You're like a warrior of old, even if you happen to be thousands of miles away."

The praise eased Cannibal's tension, relaxed his face, and actually made him almost smile. He stood up straight and lifted his chin in the air.

I'd always envisioned him like this. Proud. Confident to the point of arrogance. A real man. Who obviously still wanted to please his father just like most young boys. The thought endeared him to me all the more.
