During the assessment process, it became clear that this boy was extremely angry with his father for having “abandoned” him after the divorce. Therefore, arrangements were made for him and his father to meet conjointly. Initially, the father was defensive but soon began to respond to his son's feelings of abandonment by increasing the amount of time that he spent with him and by increasing the amount of attention that he paid to his son's day-to-day activities. As he did so, the boy began to realize that he had been acting out his angry feelings toward his father by means of passive-aggressive behavior at school and hostile behavior at home. He also began to realize that this was self-defeating and to translate this realization into behavioral change.

A couple came for therapy because of frequent dysfunctional conflicts. In the initial conjoint interview, they indicated that they were arguing almost daily and were unable to resolve any of the issues they argued about. Their communication in the interview consisted almost entirely of mutual accusations and blaming.
