Paul’s use of the provisional term “if” (ei [1487]) assumes the condition to be true for the sake of argument. Therefore, the term “because” can be inserted to render the verse: “Because God is for us, who can be against us?”

He asked, in effect, “Because God proactively foreknew and predestined believers to be like His Son, and then faithfully called and justified us, will He not be faithful to complete the final step?” This led Paul to reassure his readers by asking and answering four rhetorical questions, much like an orator stirring a crowd to action. Each question takes clear aim at Satan and his minions but demands the same response—“No one!”—because evil is powerless before almighty God:
