The Chocolate Room

As with Wonka, the Chocolate Room is described in such loving and intricate detail that most of the decision-making is taken out of the illustrator’s hands. The main challenge, Joseph Schindelman remembers, was where to place the waterfall and extend the river so that it could carry the boat off later on.

Some reviewers expressed disappointment at the absence of the chocolate river and boat ride from the musical production of Charlie, and with the production’s rendering of the waterfall as a narrow strip of brown and gold-lit wavy tubes coming down from the flies. ‘Like a giant Curly Wurly,’ sniffed one reviewer – so, even if the waterfall was underwhelming, at least you could argue that it was apposite. But it proved too difficult to create the necessary effects within a live show and still get the production to come in at anything like a reasonable running time. There is nothing like having to assemble and dismantle a foaming cataract of chocolate to stop your show dead in its tracks.
