GRAPEVINE BEETLE

Latin name: Pelidnota punctata

Family: Scarabaeidae

Identification: 1 inch long, yellow or tan, usually with 3 black spots on elytra and 2 on pronotum

Distribution: Ontario to Florida, west to South Dakota and Texas

Comments: There are many variations in the color pattern of these beetles. When they were first described in 1915, the color variations were believed to be different species. Although the insects can identify members of their own species regardless of the color variations among individuals, it can be very confusing for insect enthusiasts. Adult grapevine beetles feed on grape leaves and grapes, but they are generally not numerous enough to cause much damage. Their larvae usually live in decaying wood. If you don’t live where grapes are grown, you may still see these beetles because in addition to commercially grown grapes, grapevine beetles feed on the leaves of the many species of wild grapes. The beetles fly rapidly on warm nights and are attracted to lights. Grapevine beetles do not bite and are harmless.
