hunter is in a state of panic, unable to function rationally. He needs to get out of that state to survive, a very difficult thing to do. His mind is running in a closed loop, repeating an ineffectual action again and again.

This backward recitation of the prayer could very well be just what the doctor ordered to break that vicious circle. It is a most difficult thing to do that requires total concentration. It takes about half a minute to recite the Lord's Prayer from beginning to end, and it can be done almost automatically, with no thinking at all.
