. . . . .

Johnathan’s wife, Brita, led the way as the Baldwins and Sandersons made their way to the Rocky Mountains. He and a group of kids lay in the back of the Chevy Tahoe. They chose the northern route through Kansas City and Topeka because the southern track would take them straight through Wichita. It was far too dangerous to take that chance.

They did not know if Messai found his men after the group gunned them down at the cabin, but they would stay as far away from Wichita as possible. One of the kids looked through the rear window and yelled.

“Look daddy! Their car is on fire!”

“Brita, stop! They’ve overheated. That thing is blowing steam like crazy.”

“I can’t do that! We’re supposed to stay apart from each other, remember?”

“Then go to the next exit, and I’ll call Julian.”

“Looks like the next exit is about five miles.”

“Then move on. There’s a creek over the hill. They can get water from it.”

“Julian, we just crossed a small creek. If you’re overheated, you can stop there and put water in the car. I’m glad you let the kids ride with us.”

He told Joanie to pull over just ahead and turn off the vehicle. Brita continued to the exit.

Julian had just exited the vehicle when a patrolman pulled in behind them.

“Joanie, stay calm and talk to him,” he said over his shoulder as he walked over the embankment carrying two milk jugs. “I’ll pretend I didn’t notice him.” He moved so fast he slid down the hill.

The officer strode to Joanie’s window, which she already had down.

“Ma’am, it appears your vehicle has overheated. I saw your husband going over the bank to get water. If you will pop the hood for me, I will see what’s going on.”

He raised the hood, looked around and using his handkerchief, turned the radiator cap slowly until it was off and steam stopped rolling. He looked closer and stood up just as Julian arrived back at the vehicle, puffing and panting from the lengthy walk.

“Thanks for checking on us, officer. This thing got too hot, and I had quite a hike carrying this water up here.” He grinned. “I’ll pour it in and we’ll get on our way. But I appreciate your help.”

“You’re not going anywhere, son. Your water hose burst. Pour in all the water you want, and it will blow right back out.”

Julian leaned in to look too. Sure enough, the man was right. Now what?

“It’s about five miles to the next exit. I can call a tow truck, or if we can carry enough water to fill it, you might make it to the exit. I’ll follow you to make sure you do.”

He walked back to the patrol car and returned carrying a large can. “I keep this with me for occasions like this,” he said with a smile.

Both trekked to the creek and returned with all three containers filled with water.
