Using acidic-based moisturizers can assist with maintaining the skin pH ~5. However, as shown below, a majority of commercially-available moisturizers (17 of the 30) have pH’s higher than 5.5 (Shi et al. 2002):

Therefore, to optimize skin barrier function and antimicrobial defense, it’s important to choose wisely (i.e. a skin cleanser and moisturizer with a pH ~5) from the list of acidic-based skin cleansers and moisturizers.

Microbial pathogens can also enter us through our mouth.

In a healthy mouth (left side of the picture), there is a symbiotic relationship between oral microbes with our teeth. In contrast, with poor oral health (right side of the picture), the oral bacteria are changed such that dysbiotic microbial biofilms accumulate, thereby causing gingivial (gum) inflammation (gingivitis; Hajishengallis 2015). Gingivitis can progress to the more severe form of gum disease, periodontitis. In untreated periodontitis, 108 to 1012 gram-negative bacteria may be found in the periodontal pockets that surround each diseased tooth (Haraszthy et al. 2000). Some of the bacterial species implicated in the pathogenesis of periodontitis include Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) and Treponema denticola (T. denticola; Socransky and Haffajee 2000). Ulceration of the gums enables translocation of these (and other) bacteria into the systemic circulation, where they can be found in atherosclerotic plaque (Cavrini et al. 2005) and in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients (Riviere et al. 2002). Moreover, P. gingivalis has been shown to cause atherosclerotic plaque formation (Velsko et al. 2014).
