Love Is the Key

Remember that this child of yours has had as many (more or less) lifetimes as you, and therefore is a spiritual being just as you are, with particular experiences, talents, karma, and character traits. Your children incarnated to be with you. They picked you as parents to learn certain lessons, gain experience, develop certain aspects of their character, and work on strengthening their weaker areas of spiritual development.

This does not absolve you of your responsibilities as a parent, but it does absolve you of being totally accountable for whatever your children become. As spiritual beings, they are equal to you. They have chosen to be your kids this time; perhaps you were their children in some other lifetime. You know how parents often say, “Just wait until you have kids. I hope they are just like you!” Well, perhaps that is why your kids are your kids this time! We are more like our kids, and they are more like us, than we care to admit.

The greatest opportunity we have for growth is in our relationships with others. It is only as we see ourselves reflected in them that we get feedback on who we are. If you can see the issues your children bring up for you as opportunities for character development for both you and them, you will find the problems much less troublesome. We only add to the difficulties when we worry, blame, or try to escape the challenges we are facing with our kids. Look at what is tough for you to handle in your kids; then see what the lesson is for you. As you deal with this, you will release the struggle with the child, and your relationship will improve. Remember to see the humor in the situation or relationship, and feel the love you have for this human who is very special to you.

Feel honored, because they chose you for a reason, and rise to the task at hand. Give them your time, your attention, and yourself; this is love. Kids remember the important events with you, but they don’t remember how often they occurred. So give fully to them whenever you can.
