CHAPTER 15

In Austin, Texas, a station wagon made its way through the flooded streets. A huge wave from the gulf had swept over the city, depositing wrecked boats and oil tankers into the center of town.

Four children had survived the destruction. From the car radio, they learned that the huge alien mother ship had destroyed the entire east coast of the United States. Only fifteen years old, Samantha was behind the wheel. Her thirteen-year-old brother, Bobby, sat in the passenger seat. In the back were her eleven-year-old brother, Felix, and her seven-year-old sister, Daisy, who looked like a smaller copy of fair-haired, blue-eyed Sam—except that Daisy was sobbing, and Sam was doing everything she could to keep her cool.

“Daisy, stop crying,” Sam said.

“She’s scared, okay?” Felix protested, patting Ginger, the sweet, little brown dog sitting next to him.

Bobby glared at Sam. “You shouldn’t be driving. You don’t even have your license.”

“I don’t think anyone is going to pull us over,” she shot back. “The radio said to head inland, so that’s where we’re going.”

Sam steered around a wrecked fishing boat. Felix peered out his window—and saw Julius Levinson, still tied to his fishing chair!

Bobby saw him too. “There’s a guy on that boat!”

“I’m not stopping,” Sam said. “He’s probably dead.”

Bobby shook his head. “No, he was moving.”

Felix leaned over the front seat. “We have to stop! He’s really old. He needs our help.”

With a sigh, Sam hit the brakes. Bobby and Felix ran out to the tilted boat. Felix noticed dozens of books had spilled out of it. They’d been drenched by the wave. He picked one up.

“I think he’s knocked out,” Bobby said, examining Julius.

Felix stashed the book in his pocket and helped his brother unlock the fishing chair. Julius hit the ground with a thud.

“If he wasn’t, he is now,” Sam remarked.
