With this thought, and the thought of the excellent athletes representing Canada on the field that I had been watching in the Commonwealth games, I called Bromley Armstrong and Al Hamilton to sound them out on the idea of forming some kind of association of Black business and professional people and, at the same time, honouring male and female Black athletes who were making Canada, for the first time since Harry Jerome’s retirement, a force to be reckoned with in international track and field. Bromley and Al were encouraging, so I wrote a letter outlining the plan and sent it to a wide range of established figures in the Black community, inviting them to a founding meeting at the Underground Railroad restaurant on October 21. After the divisions I had seen in the Black community when we were organizing the Committee for Due Process for Buddy Evans, I made sure that there were Blacks from a range of countries, as well as native Blacks. The response was almost universally positive with only a few exceptions, like the University of Toronto professor who objected to using the term “Black.” To these few I was respectful, but I knew that getting tied up in semantics right off the bat was a way to ensure that nothing at all would come of the venture. I let the quibblers know that they were welcome to join with us — or not.
