Poison ivy’s small, hard seeds are quite easy to identify. They’re distinctively rounded, almost heart-shaped. They were found in the droppings or innards of more than fifty species of birds. Harder to identify were the chewed remnants of poison ivy leaves, but direct observation confirms that they are an important browse for many species of mammals.

All those decades of research, as well as research ongoing to this day, demonstrate that poison ivy is a major wildlife food. In the Guide’s listing of hundreds of native woody plants that are of survival value to wildlife across the nation, poison ivy was ranked seventh.
