How to Take a Soil Sample

The quality of your test results depends on the quality of your sample. Remember that a very small amount of soil is going to have to represent your whole garden area. Professional soil labs may provide specific instructions or a kit for collecting samples; if so, follow their directions carefully. If you’re using a home kit or the lab doesn’t provide its own instructions, follow the steps here.

You’ll need a separate sample for each part of the yard; sample lawn in one test, the vegetable garden in another, and flower beds in a separate test. If any part of your garden seems significantly different (looks or feels different, collects more water, or plants grow differently there), take a separate sample from there to find out what’s causing the difference.
