Principals should forge business and social service partnerships that provide families with access to individual and family mental health counseling, healthcare, vision screening, and dental care. Businesses can provide teachers and students with skill development training in computers and technology.

ORGANIZING COMMUNITY FORUMS WITH DIVERSE STAKEHOLDERS

Community forums can be organized by the school district in partnership with the district schools. The purpose of community forums can be to meet and interact with the school community to identify concerns, problem solve, and discuss the overall short- and long-term goals of a school district in support of the various district schools. Community forums can also develop breakout sessions for problem solving. Examples of community forum breakout topics include the following:

• A discussion on the school district mission and how it aligns to core values

• A description of the district’s accountability plan and its overall support of schools in achieving specific goals and objectives for increased student achievement

• An update on facility improvements and maintenance issues to assure community members that the school district is supporting schools in creating a safe and secure learning environment

• An update on school safety programs to reduce the incidence of crime on and around the school campus

• A discussion on textbook adoptions and how the curriculum supports the district’s overall goals for student achievement

• A description of safety net services available to students requiring added academic support beyond the traditional program

• An overview of the various supplemental health, human care, and academic support programs available to students’ parents and community members

• A summary of resource development strategies and an update on new grants, donations, and sponsorships the school district and individual schools have received to expand their educational services for students and their families

• A review of the various reform initiatives that the school district has implemented at the various school sites

• Other pertinent concerns and emerging programs that can be of interest to the greater school community
