Effective Talking: Advertising and Selling
When we want to convey an idea to a group of young children, we know we need to express it multiple times in multiple ways. For instance, if we want to explain to children how to use scissors safely, we might put on a puppet show about scissor safety at circle time, then have a small-group, hands-on activity with scissors at centers time, then have a conversation about scissor safety at the lunch table . . . and then do it all again the next day. The same principle applies to expressing an idea to adults. To communicate effectively with a group of families, you need to present an idea at different times in different ways, so that different families can access the idea in the way that makes the most sense for them. This is not to say that families are stupid or hard to communicate with, any more than children are stupid or hard to communicate with. But we recognize that, like children, each adult is a unique individual; for groups of individuals to understand us, we need a range of strategies and opportunities for communicating with them.
In this case, the idea we’re communicating is about resilience, and what your school does to promote it. You believe children’s physical and emotional development are important. You value resilience and know that your teaching practices have a role in building resilience in children. You make careful, thoughtful decisions about how you will interact with children’s physical play and risk taking and their injuries and recoveries. These beliefs and practices are part of who you are as an educator and as a program. You need to advertise and sell those values and practices.
Advertise and sell are words that have picked up the tarnish of crass commercialism, but they’re important aspects of communication. Advertising means clearly expressing who you are and what you do. Selling means convincing people that who you are and what you do are good. In other words, if you believe in your teaching practice, advertising and selling are simply parts of effective talking.
