Staging During Rehearsal

In a play where the actors will be seen for the entire performance, staging is a critical part of the play. Consequently, it should be extensively rehearsed and perfected. However, in a film the staging of the dialogue scenes can be done very late in the process. First of all, we often don’t know the locations for the scenes until the last minute. Second, we may not have enough rehearsal time to explore the characters and stage the scene too. Third, since the scenes are relatively short, a few pages at once, the actors can quickly learn whatever staging is needed.

Steven Soderbergh: “I’m not a big rehearsal person as opposed to when I started. And now, I like getting people together, and we talk about the script in general and try and see if there are any red flags, but I’m not big on seeing it anymore before we’re on the set. I’ve taken the more Fellini approach, which is a big, long dinner with lots of wine and stuff and everybody sort of just hanging out. And it’s because I’m really afraid of getting in their way. And so, what I really want from them in the rehearsal process is, how do they want to be talked to? Who are they, for one? I’m going to be in a trench with this person for ten or twelve weeks. Who are they? Where did they come from? How do they talk? How do they carry themselves? So I’d rather spend more time seeing them in a non-performance mode at this point so that I have a sense of who they are than seeing them perform.”
