Chapter 50
I tried to ignore it at first. Then the caller ID rang out like my phone was programmed to and said in a monotone voice, "Noah Sullivan."
I sighed, breaking out of me and Alex's embrace as I stumbled to my phone. "I'm sorry, Alex, but I should really get this."
He murmured, probably in disagreement with my choice. I picked up my phone, pressing the button that would answer the call.
"Louisa?" His voice rang out on the other end of the line.
That was all it took to put me in panic mode. His voice wobbled on the other end, making me jump to conclusions that he was crying. Something was wrong.
"Noah, what's wrong? What happened?" Alex must have sensed the urgency in my voice because he bounded towards me, whispering softly to put it on speaker phone.
I did so as I waited for Noah's response. "It's...it's my mom. They say she has," Noah broke down and it felt like he was ripping my heart out of my chest. I had never heard him so vulnerable like this before. "She has less than a week left to live."
The phone slipped out of my grasp right after he said it. I couldn't believe it. I mean, I knew that she wasn't doing so well, she was in the hospital a couple weeks ago. But I didn't know she was that bad. I didn't know that she was so close to dying. And I felt terrible because I know Noah was suffering more than he would like to admit right now.
My phone would've smashed on my floor and shattered if Alex hadn't swiftly swiped it from the air and placed it back in my hands. "Where are you, Noah?" This was not the time to be sad, I needed to get to him first. I needed to make sure he was alright.
"The hospital. Same place as before."
"I'm on my way." I said, already picking up Wanda and rushing out my bedroom door, Alex following in tow.
"Louisa?" Noah said from his end.
"Yeah?"
"Can you tell everyone?"
I gave my response quickly, rushing down the stairs. "Of course. Don't get off the phone with me though, Noah, I need to keep knowing you're okay before I get there."
"Alright."
I punched Alex lightly in the ribs, signaling him to text the others and tell them what's going on. My mom met me at the door, asking me softly, "What's happening?"
I opened the door as she stepped to the side. "No time to explain mom, I'll call you later I promise. We're going to the hospital."
And with that, Alex and I stepped into the frigid Winter air, hustling to his house a couple doors down. We both knew that he was the one that needed to drive, seeming as how I couldn't physically drive and I didn't exactly want my mom to come to the hospital with us. My mom gets traumatized from the hospital almost as much as I do, and I don't want to force that burden back on her shoulders.
