Mix, Mix, and Mix Again

As you start bringing up the faders on individual tracks, the quality of your mix changes, often making previously mixed tracks sound different. For this reason, you might need to go back and readjust one or more of the earlier tracks as you move through the mix.

This constant fine-tuning is a necessary part of the mixing process. Remember, even though you’re working with one track at a time, everything has to work together. It really is a process that mixes together individual tracks to create a unique new whole.

So if adding a synth pad obscures the backing vocals, you either need to back off on the synth or go back and slide up the fader for the vocals. Each new track you add affects how you hear the previous tracks. No single track exists in a vacuum; every track has to mix together with the others.
