Over the years there have been numerous claims by people who have actually seen and spoken with Mary. These supernatural appearances by the Blessed Mother are called Marian apparitions and they have made headlines, and been written about, profiled on television, and dramatized on film. Out of the numerous claims, the Holy See has studied 295 causes. After intense scrutiny, they have deemed 12 “worthy of belief.” This does not mean that the others are somehow false, but most agree that the apparitions are largely a question of faith. Though impossible to prove or disprove, there is no question that the phenomena has had a tremendous impact on the Church. They have been responsible not only for the construction of some of the largest Marian churches in the world, and the spread of Marian devotion, but also for millions of conversions to the Catholic faith. Following are some samples of the most well-known stories.
