Language is an aspect which defines ethnic boundary, and on the campus, the Naxi language brings Naxi students together as it consolidates the groups’ ethnic community. Chinese is the medium of instruction in the classroom, while after classes, some Naxi speak the Naxi language, but most students prefer to speak Chinese. In the school, it is common to hear students talk with each other in Chinese, as well as in the Naxi and Bai languages in their spare time. The Naxi students have more in common with people from the same ethnic group and the same region. One Naxi student explained:

If we do not want other people to understand us, we will talk with each other in the Naxi language. I feel close to the Naxi. If there are two people, and one is a Han and the other one is a Naxi, despite having more chances to have contact with the Han, I would still feel closer to the Naxi. As time goes by, I would feel closer to the Naxi than to the Han. There are some exceptions. Some of my Naxi friends are already sinicized. Well, if they had kept more Naxi characteristics, I would like them more. I cannot spell out the Naxi characteristics, but I can feel them. (IS38D5)
