How Do You Determine Your Purpose?
Finding your purpose is as simple or complicated as answering the following question - Why?
Why do you wake up every morning? Why did you choose your partner? Why do you work for a living? Why are you here on earth?
Why is the single greatest question we can ask ourselves. In answering the question, our whole lives can become more focused and powerful. We’ve seen examples of what happens when ordinary men burn with passion in pursuit of their purpose.
We all have that purpose inside of us. Many of usjust don’t know where to look or what to look for. When you were younger, perhaps you played the picture storybook game “Where’s Waldo?” You knew two things for sure 1) Waldo was hidden somewhere on the page and 2) He always wore the same red & white striped sweater. Finding him then was a matter of careful focus and patience.
Your purpose is a lot like that. Two things are for certain 1) It exists, waiting to be found and 2) It always encourages consistent action.
Let’s look at how we can find our purpose.
What Do You Enjoy?
I’m not concerned with what puts a small smile on your face. Ask yourself, what do you TRULY enjoy? What puts a smile in your soul and gives you an uncontrollable sense of happiness and peace? Is it a walk through nature? Is it watching your kids or grandkids grow up? Is it a business idea that you can see revolutionizing the entire world?
Think about your passions in life. All of us have a few. You might have a genuine love and appreciation for all types of music, art, or fashion. You might love science or religion or perhaps you love models of effective leadership or political structure. There is no right or wrong passion. What matters is that it’s something that truly inspires YOU, not what you’re told to be inspired by.
Don’t get caught up in the dead end road of pretending to like, or psyching yourself into liking something because you’re afraid others won’t understand or will think your passion is stupid. Don’t think your passion isn’t valid because it doesn’t seem profitable or worthwhile. Purpose is never about finances, and no matter what it is you love, there are millions of people who love the exact same thing. Besides, even if it was about money, there has never been an industry or passion in the history of the world that hasn’t made someone a millionaire. Most likely the person was so passionate about it that they focused on the purpose and the financial success followed.
Your passion should be yours alone, independent from the thoughts and opinions of others. It can be as broad as space or as finite as eco-friendly paper bags. It just has to make your heart beat when you think about it.
Spend some time right now, or over the next few days or weeks, making a list of things that truly get your heart pumping and put a smile on your face.
