Chapter 10: The Beginning Of The Beginning

I woke up the following morning feeling like I was part of something bigger than me. Seeing Joseph in his home interacting with Christine and his kids gave me a more complete vision of what I really wanted in my own life.

As I walked into the office at 6:38 a.m., Joseph saw me and immediately called me into his office.

“Vincent, we’ll have lunch together today. Come grab me right before noon,” Joseph said.

“Sounds good,” I replied.

I spent the morning making cold calls and actually booked three appointments with some investment prospects. Booking three appointments in a 4-hour block of time was pretty good. I had made huge improvements in my communication skillsets.

When lunchtime came, I walked over to Joseph’s office. He told me that we’d be having lunch at The Hotel 100.

It’s funny because even though I had been working there for the past six months with Francisco, it never crossed my mind to eat there.

As we sat down at the table and browsed the menu, I quickly realized why I’d never thought to eat at The Hotel 100.

It was EX-PEN-SIVE.

I guess Joseph could tell that I was intimidated by the right side of the menu, so he reassured me that lunch was on him. He insisted that I order the Maine lobster salad, ordering for the both of us.

We talked a lot about what I’d learned during my internship, and I could tell that he was proud of me, and not in a condescending way. He was really enthused about the progress I had made. I think it reminded him of his own experience in the beginning stages of his career with The Icon.

“Vincent, you’ve been interning at the firm for six and a half months, right?” Joseph assumptively asked.

“Yes, sir,” I replied.

“And you’ve passed your insurance licensing exam, your Series 66 and Series 7, correct?” Joseph assumptively asked.

“Yes, sir,” I replied again.

“Okay, well that does it. You’ve completed your internship,” Joseph said to me as he stood up to firmly shake my hand.

“Joseph, thank you so much for everything you’ve done for me. This has been an incredible experience. I’ve learned so much,” I said to him.

Part of me felt accomplished, yet the bigger part of me was scared to death. If my internship was over, what did that mean?

Was this the end of The Icon’s deal with me?

“So Vincent, I know you’ve learned a lot during your internship at the firm. Have you thought much about where you want to take your career now that this is all over?” Joseph asked.

That question put a major lump in my throat.

And just as my dry throat attempted to swallow, up walked The Icon. “Look at these two power players here!” The Icon exclaimed, patting each of us on the shoulder.

I was definitely not a power player, but I must admit, even though The Icon was just saying that to make me feel good, it actually did make me feel good.

“I was just telling
