He could too easily get used to this life.

Sunbaked days, followed by star strewn dinners by the pool, nursing a glass of house Chianti, an amazing spread of salumi, cold salmon and goat cheese to start, followed up by risotto, or fresh-made pasta, maybe a second course of lamb chops or veal, and a finale of tiramisu or pistachio panna cotta. And sure, he had to put up with Winchester Marshall’s non-stop stories, musings about location shots, or worse, stories from on-set escapades as Jack Powers.

York wanted to give him a real-life version of hard truth, but what would that do?

Besides he didn’t want to give Winchester a reason to avoid him, start hiding. He needed the man close.

Now, Winchester sat at the end of the table, his bodyguard—a guy named Lake—seated next to him. He’d regaled them with a story about Chris Hemsworth, making fun of his accent, and a few of his crazy stunt-fails, and had the entire table—well, at least Ziggy and RJ—laughing.

The remains of dinner sat on a board in the middle of the table—a mouthwatering fig and prosciutto pizza with red onions, arugula and goat cheese, baked in the outdoor pizza oven.

“This is the best pizza I’ve ever eaten,” Roy said as he finished his final piece and pushed his chair back, picked up his wine. He raised a glass to Tessa. She wore a flowing white dress, her hair pulled back in a scarf.

“Agreed,” Win said. “Grazie.”

She pressed her hand to her heart and bowed. “I hope you all saved room for cannoli.” She got up.

Santini took her hand even as she moved away from the table. “She keeps me fat.”

Hardly. The man was lean and tan, although admittedly, York had yet to see him work out. Or even work, period.

Then again, York spent most of his hours by the pool…or rather, in the pool. He was turning into a sort of manatee with the hours he spent playing with Hana.

She’d come alive since that moment she’d fallen into the pool. Scared him to death, the splash, the scream.

He’d gone into the water without a second thought, yanking her up. She clung to him, her skinny legs around his waist, her arms gripping his.

“Vso horosho,“ he’d said in Russian. Everything’s okay. He said it again, and she leaned back and looked at him, her blue eyes wide.

“Do you want to learn to swim?” he’d asked without thinking.

She’d nodded, then, and his fate was sealed.

Half play, half instruction, but every day she became more confident in the pool.

And sneaked into his heart. Now, she sat next to RJ, coloring a picture—a fish, a cat, a pool, a house.

RJ also held a crayon, coloring the sun, creating the vineyards in the background. She wore a sweet smile, probably didn’t even know it, and in a blink, he saw it—

Their future. Children, seated at a large table, him at the grill, or maybe he’d make his own pizza oven, RJ hollering at the boys to stop wrestling, maybe braiding a little girl’s hair like she did for Hana this afternoon.
