"Did you build one?"

"Yes, with my trusty little toolbox, a nail file, and a transistor radio."

"Really?" He sounded impressed.

"No!"

"Did you find one? Did one of your friends at Ford build one?"

If I were honest, I'd have to admit I wished he'd come out and guess what was really happening. What a relief that scenario would have been! How unlikely was it, though? He'd seen Cathy Voight for months and months before I'd arrived on the scene. Coming up with "Did you get hit in the head when a microwave oven exploded, time travel half a century, and take over my tenant's body?" was going to be a bit of stretch even for someone with a big imagination. "Yes, that's it," I responded as flatly as possible. "Actually, I ordered a time machine kit from the back of one of the comic books you love so dearly." Drollery wasn't all that easy when dancing; I nearly tripped over myself as we turned in a slow circle near the jazz trio. Luckily Hank was still clutching me firmly around the waist to help me regain my balance. I thought about what I'd said. "You can't do that, can you?"

"I'm not going to tell anyone," he said, in much the same way that the other men on the dance floor were whispering sweet nothings into their lovers' ears. "I won't turn you in to the government or to scientists at Johns Hopkins."

"Oh, so sweet!" I exclaimed. "Keep up that kind of talk and who knows, I might be tempted to let you have your wicked way with me."

"If you've been to the future, tell me who's president in twenty years. And who wins the space race. And maybe what stocks I ought to be buying." When I didn't answer, or do anything other than stare over his shoulder in an impassive way, he added, "I thought we were friends now, Cathy. If you've got something to tell me, tell me."

"This is the way you treat your friends?" I asked, so frustrated that it hurt. I wanted to tell him. I really did. Yet deep at heart I knew this was all some kind of game. He didn't really believe in my biggest secret. Nor would he be able to handle the truth about me if I burdened him with it. "Seems to me that you've got a lot of family members who'd be glad to help you out with stock tips if you were interested."

"I told you not to use that against me."

I returned the undertone of warning in his voice with a certain snappishness of my own. "So don't you be using my big fat misspeaking mouth against me. Are we dancing here, or wrestling? Can't we just, you know, enjoy the moment?" Not that I was sure I'd enjoy it again, myself.

"I'm sorry," he said after a moment.

"I don't know why one of us always needs to be haranguing the other," I said, not yet able to let go.

"I said I was sorry.
