16. A problem of our liturgy, in Biblical texts and in Heschel’s writing is speaking of God with masculine pronouns. In contemporary liturgies, other words such as Eternal One, Shechinah, She, are often used to overcome the roadblocks of masculine gender.

17. The letters YHWH apparently spelled the name of the ancient Israelite God. We do not know how it was pronounced because the consonants are without vowel signs. When we see that ancient name, we say Adonai which translates as Lord.
