Chapter 5 – How Plants Grow

The seven stages of plant growth all have their own nutrient needs. These seven stages can be grouped into three sub-sections—growth, flowering, and fruiting. Most plants begin their life cycle with pollination, whether by self or by cross-pollination, though you can cultivate plants through root cuttings or stem cuttings too.

Pollination

Pollination is done through two parts of the flower. Pollen grains carry male plant sperm or gametes and are found on the stamens or anthers of each flower. These grains need to be transferred to the stigma either by wind or animal intervention. For example, when honey bees visit flowers to collect nectar they will end up covered in pollen grains from the anthers, these then transfer to the stigma (either of the same flower or another) when the bee brushes past as it leaves. The pollen then travels down the style and into the ovary of the plant. If you look into the center of a flower you will see one stalk that appears slightly longer with a rounded base, this is the stigma, style, and ovary of the flower.
