Tips and Tricks for Growing Hydroponic Basil
Your basil plants need two main elements in order to survive: calcium and potassium. Of course, if you want to increase their yield (leaf production) you should also supplement them with magnesium and nitrogen.
There are a number of basil varieties that do well when grown hydroponically, these include:
● Globe basil (which is a great choice if you’ve got limited growing space, as it does not need a large growing area to thrive);
● Citrus basil;
● Sweet Thai basil;
● Cinnamon basil;
● Holy basil;
● Spicy basil;
● Bi-colour basil;
● Red Rubin basil;
● Dark opal basil;
● Lettuce leaf basil;
● Elindra basil;
● Genovese basil;
● Purple delight basil; and
● Purple ruffles basil.
Just like strawberries, basil can also be grown from cuttings (which offers a quicker maturation rate than growing it from seed). Basil needs a sterile growing medium to grow in to thrive, for this reason, it is suggested that you use rock wool as your growing medium when cultivating basil. Young basil plants are prone to developing a fungal infection known as pythium. Pythium spores are transported around a hydroponic garden through direct and indirect contact (i.e. through contact with gardening tools and implements, through the reservoir and connecting systems, and through growing mediums). Pythium is a likely result of the growing medium remaining overly wet between watering cycles, so be sure to check that you are not overwatering your young basil plants in order to prevent this fungal infection from taking hold of your crops.
