Chapter 4. Nutrient Deficiency Symptom
For those people with little knowledge on nutrient deficiency on plants difficult to determine what is causing the deficiency symptoms. The problem here is that at least each nutrient deficiency brings almost the same symptoms on crops. There is only a small difference in each deficiency. I have collected the information below to help you differentiate the symptoms.
Nitrogen-the affected plants look small in size and have a stunted growth. It has smaller and lighter leaves. The plant grows slowly than normal. The tips of the lower leaves turn pale in color, the plant will have a spindly soft stem, a delayed flowering and finally your plants become susceptible to pests and diseases.
Phosphorus: your plant will have a stunted growth and look small in size. The leaves will start too discolor and sometimes turn dark. It will have a hard stem and a poor root system. Look for the symptoms in mature leaves since it is the areas where the deficiency starts to attack.
Potassium: inspect your plants when they are in there early stages of development. The older leaves start to curl and to turn yellow. The stems turn soft while flowers become lackluster. Finally your plants become susceptible to pests and diseases as well as rust and mildew.
Calcium: you will notice that your plants are having a deficiency of calcium when you look at the rooting system. The root system is underdeveloped. The edges of younger leave will start to curl. Your plants will have a stunted growth and have crinkled leaves.
Magnesium: you will not realize the symptoms of this deficiency until it is well established. Your crops will have a stunted growth. The flowers will takes time to develop. The leaves will turn yellow but the veins maintain their green color. Eventually the entire plant will dry out.
Iron: you will realize that your plants are having an iron deficiency when you see leave tips turning yellowish or pale. Due to reduced chlorophyll the leave will turn blotchy, turn brown and eventually die out.
