Chapter Thirteen

The following night, Pal sat in her rusty old van texting back and forth with Mason. She’d yet to determine why she was forced to park a few blocks away from the Island Theatre when Mondays were usually chill. Unsure the spot she’d found on the street in front of St. Bart’s elementary was legal, she was willing to risk the ticket after having circled the block upwards of ten times. The cold and damp of the misty fall evening rolled in since she’d cut the engine and her fingers trembled slightly as she tapped out messages.

PAL: Ya boy has been real busy today.

All day, Gary Talbot, AKA ReignofFreedom1972 had been hard at work, throwing out a barrage of obscure videos he’d dug up and creating memes out of every embarrassing pic of Pal he could find on the internet. An endless number of posts appeared on just about every social media platform, always including his new favorite hashtag, #SenatorsPal.

Some of Mason’s major detractors, attention-seeking conservative content creators, and a few PACs that sought to defame the senator, joined in and the whole thing blew up. This time it wasn’t just people she knew diving into the fray to defend her. A slew of randos had decided she was being harassed and took up her cause as the outrage-du-jour.

MASON: Yeah, I’m going through all the horrible posts. You okay?

PAL: Yeah. I’m fine. What’s this guy’s deal?

MASON: I don’t know. But it makes me so rageful watching him go after you, I’ve nearly ground my teeth down to nubs.

PAL: Aww. You’re so hot when you’re protective.

MASON: Dammit, one of the pages totally caught me grinning at your text and now a few of them are whispering to each other.

PAL: Haha! Did I make you blush? How adorable. The young’uns can tell you LIKE me.

MASON: I do like you 😊 So are you going to the theatre?

PAL: I’m here now.

She didn’t bother to tell him about the brisk, seven-hour walk she’d have to take from her parking spot to get to the theatre. It would only make him worry unnecessarily.

MASON: I’m proud of you for going. You’re a badass.

PAL: Nah. I’m only here to see if I can collect on our bet. I really need the money.

MASON: Ian will come around. Shit. I gotta go. Be safe and break a leg tonight. Xoxo

PAL: I will. Go lead the country or whatever.

MASON: Haha. Will do.

Three chilly, drizzly blocks later, she arrived at the theatre. As she neared the building, the cause of the crummy parking situation became clear. A line of patrons ran out the door and down the block. It was fairly safe to presume her strange, newfound fame had drawn a huge crowd. Zinging excitement mixed with fluttery nerves shot through her as she ducked down the alley to head in the back door.

When she entered the second floor, the opening team was playing an overly energetic, warm-up game in the kitchen area. Eight greenhorn dudes stood in a circle cracking each other up with their over-the-top shtick.
