Funding for UNICEF
It is costly to fund UNICEFâs efforts to aid children throughout the world. Most UNICEF funding comes from the governments of the UNâs member nations, and individual and group donations from around the world also help out. In the United States, volunteers and workers with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF work to help reach funding goals for the organization. They visit schools and teach about the programs of UNICEF. They also raise money by selling UNICEF greeting cards.
One way children get involved in fund-raising for UNICEF is the âTrick or Treat for UNICEFâ program. This program first began on Halloween of 1950 when some children in Philadelphia carried decorated milk cartons from house to house to collect coins for poor children overseas: that year they raised just $17. Since then, however, trick-or-treaters for UNICEF have raised more than $170 million for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.
