Advice and Recommendations

• Although the language and concepts in Freud’s genetic framework—phallic, oral, and anal stages and Oedipal or Electra complexes—seem far removed from the “real world” of business organizations, when considering the elusive nature of reality, the ubiquity of client preconscious blind spots, and the reality of coaching transference and counter-transference, Freud’s theories are not all that far removed from today’s organizations.

• The legacy of Freud’s two dissident followers, Adler and Jung, directly impact the practitioner. Adler’s focus on normative, re-educative change to build a better society and Jung’s use of myth and symbol to tap into generic archetypes, are core components of many humanistic intervention strategies.

• A basic understanding of the relationship of the theoretical foundations of the big three to humanistic will benefit the practitioner, the operational manager, and the scholar/researcher.
