Klow-ee leaned forward as if waiting for something. And then she frowned. “That’s it? Good. A cheap pizza is good, a jog through the park is good, hell, a pap schh-meer can be good. Meeting your match shouldn’t be…just good.”

I raised a shoulder, still grinning. “It was good. She wants to be a healer for humans. She’s very smart.”

“Okay,” Klow-ee said, drawing out the word to sound like two. Ooh and kaee.

Cutlass chuckled and pulled Klow-ee back into his lap. “Hudson is happy. That should tell you enough.”

But his mate did not look accepting of that. “Hudson is always happy. That’s just him.”

Klow-ee refocused on me, cocking her head like a bird of prey. “Did you tell her where you’re from? That you’re an—” she lowered her voice “—alien?”

I never understood why she said that word so quietly. “No. I enjoyed her company, though. She’s the right match for me.”

“Congratulations,” Cutlass said. “Did you mate her?”

Klow-ee smacked him in the chest. “Jeez, Cutlass. Way to be suu-tull.”

“What is suu-tull?” he asked, looking from her to me and back again. I could only shake my head. That word didn’t translate.

“Shit. You guys need reprogramming for the language or something.” Klow-ee scrunched up her face in an odd, totally human way. “So, since my man here came in like a wrecking ball…did you?”

“Did I what?” I asked as I leaned against the wall by the door.

“Mate her? Have the sex? Get down and dirty in the C with the D?”

I only understood one of those questions. “No. We did mate mouths, though. I can see now why you and Cutlass are always attached at the lips. Her taste is addictive.”

They both stared at me as if I was an idiot. And maybe I was because I had wanted very much to bury my face in Macy’s cunt, and I had not. Because of a phone that pinged and beeped and danced across the counters far too often. I guess I could have tried harder.
