In other words, the psalmist is declaring to his own soul and anyone else who is listening that his hope is in God. His emotions might be going crazy. His soul might be overwhelmed and overcome. He might not be able to wrap his mind around what he’s going through. But deep inside, he knows his soul can hope in God.

I love the fact that Psalms validates my tendency to overreact. All right, I might be taking that a little far. But God does validate and even celebrate our human propensity to feel life, to experience things on a primal, emotional, and at times illogical level. In moments of pain or danger, we might be surprised by our souls—but God isn’t. He holds us, guides us, and stabilizes us, even when our reactions are not exactly full of faith.

Sooner or later, we get up off the kitchen floor. We realize things were not as bad as they seemed. I don’t mean the risk or difficulty wasn’t real—it probably was. But God is bigger, and he is on our side. Our souls do not have to give in to the fear that seeks to paralyze us, because God is a sure and secure source of confidence.

The next time your soul is cast down and your heart is in turmoil, turn to God. Hope in God. Remember he has helped you before, and he will help you again. Your emotions might betray you, but God never will. He is the hope of your soul.
