From Greek ginoskein, “to have knowledge.” Gnostics were a sect that emerged within and separated from the Christian movement in the second century AD. Gnostics claimed to possess secret knowledge about God that was unavailable to others. Some Gnostics viewed the physical world and its Creator—usually identified with the God of the Old Testament—as evil. Many Gnostics were also Docetists (from Greek dokein, “to seem”) who viewed Jesus not as God incarnate but as a divine spirit who seemed to possess a human body.
