Having dealt with the phrasing and contours of a melody, we can return to that strange, third category of notes referred to earlier as the aliens.

Remember that for every major or minor chord there are three notes that are chord tones (insiders) and four notes that are diatonic—i.e., from the scale—non-chord tones (outsiders). The outsiders create mild tension and interest. If there are only twelve notes and we subtract those seven, five notes are left that must be aliens—really disruptive forces.
