In 1773, American cofounder Benjamin Franklin found three apparently dead flies in a bottle of Madeira wine. Acting on a rumor he’d heard, he dried them off and exposed them to sunlight. He claimed two of them revived, later writing, “I wish it were possible, from this instance, to invent a method of embalming drowned persons, in such a manner that they may be recalled to life at any period, however distant; for having a very ardent desire to see and observe the state of America a hundred years hence, I should prefer to any ordinary death, the being immersed in a cask of Madeira wine, with a few friends, until that time, to be recalled to life by the solar warmth of my dear country!” Though he got the medium wrong—today efforts are more focused on liquid nitrogen than booze—you could argue that Franklin was an early advocate for what eventually become cryonics.
