The reason why constant negative thoughts can have such a negative effect on not just your mind but your body as well is that it causes chronic stress. This stress upsets your hormonal balance, damages the immunes system, and depletes the brain of chemicals needed for happiness. Chronic stress can decrease lifespan.

For example, hostility, or anger, if poorly managed or repressed, can cause a slew of health problems, like high blood pressure, infections, digestive disorders, and cardiovascular disease.

Let’s look at what cynicism can do. A 2014 study by the American Academy of Neurology connected high levels of cynicism later in life to a higher risk of dementia when compared to those who were more trusting. This was even after taking into account other risk factors like smoking, certain heart health markers, sex, and age.

Our emotions and thoughts have widespread effects on how our body works, such as immune function, hormone release, and metabolism. Plus, there is the fact that when somebody is feeling down, they are more likely to take part in drinking or smoking or other unhealthy habits.
