Tip #1: Be Conversational, Specific, and Interested in Others

When we meet face-to-face, we smile, make eye contact, and chat informally as we get to know one another. This usually gets the best results, because informal conversation tends to put people at ease. Your online profile can be informal, too, if it reads more like a conversation than a bio on a job résumé. Being conversational in your online profile will give people a sense of your personality and that you are friendly. It will create interest in you and demonstrate your interest in others. Add specific yet brief and colorful descriptions to the facts about your background, experiences, and preferences to provide interesting details that people can ask you about. Plus, adding your desire to connect with others who share your social, professional, and, if applicable, personal goals will make you appear more conversational, approachable, and interesting.

Here’s an example: “I’m a food-loving baby boomer happily married and living in New York City since 1979. When I’m not writing self-help books like How to Start a Conversation and Make Friends or teaching conversation workshops, I’m playing folk and rock guitar, listening to jazz and blues, gardening (my nickname is Donnie Flowers), traveling, and exploring restaurants with my wife and friends. I love talking to people anywhere and everywhere—including online—and finding out what we have in common.” These are the kinds of details to include on your Facebook and MySpace profiles.
