Finding Prince Charming: Where the Rich Boys Are
By now youâve hopefully defined the kind of millionaire youâre looking for. Your crusade will be greatly facilitated if you know the general vicinity in which to look. Just as you wouldnât shop for cornflakes at Nieman Marcus, you donât look for a millionaire in a bowling alley. Of course, there are some millionaires who like to bowl on occasion, but for the most part, if you go looking down at Lesterâs Bowl-O-Rama, youâre going to find men with a penchant for polyester and for showing inappropriate cleavage while bending over the ball return.
To aid you in your quest, Iâve provided a list of places youâre most likely to find a millionaire, and other places youâre not likely to find them at all. There are exceptions, but remember, you can discern much about a millionaire by his environs:
HAPPY HUNTING GROUNDS AND THE RULES FOR USING THEM
The first-class section on airlinesâThis is ideal because if youâre sitting in the first-class section as well, hopefully next to the single millionaire, conversation is unavoidable.
First-class is expensive, though. Try to use frequent flyer and promotional upgrades as much as possible. If the flight is full, tell the ticket agent youâd like to sit in first-class so they can sell your coach ticket to someone else. They often put coach passengers in first-class under these circumstances, so it might as well be you. Iâve done this many times. Itâs a roomier seat, and the food is much better.
Charity WorkâThis is hands-down the best and most productive way to meet a millionaire. Itâs so important, in fact, that Iâve devoted a whole subdivision of this chapter to it. Youâll get more on this later.
Country clubsâMost millionaires consider memberships to country clubs badges of honor, and belong to at least one.
A membership, however, is above and beyond most of our budgets, so the secret is to make friends with someone who has one. Youâll be meeting wealthy women in your charity work. If theyâre members of a club, offer to play golf, tennis, racquetball, or swim with them. You can also offer to help at or with golf or tennis tournaments. Even if you live in a small town where wealthy men are few and far between, chances are youâll find them gathered at the one local country club.
Ski ResortsâThereâs a huge concentration of millionaires on the slopes. They fly in from all over the country to enjoy the finer resorts. My mother and I do our quickest and most productive harvesting here. While neither of us is a pro-skier, we both look pretty good in ski clothes, especially Mom, for a woman in her late 50âs. Wealthy men appreciate the fact that at her age sheâs still out there schussing, and they canât resist skiing up and giving her a few tips, then offering to buy her lunch, espresso, whatever.
As for me, I know the areas around the resorts like the back of my hand, and offer that information liberally.
