8. Thou Shalt Admit When Thou Art Wrong

Many Catholics are concerned about not being able to answer questions; if you are, you must not let that keep you from evangelizing. The solution to this is simple. If you don’t know the answer to a question, just admit it, promise to get back to the person who asked the question, and then go find the answer. This requires humility, but it is the right thing to do. I can guarantee that even well-known apologists like Tim Staples and Pat Madrid have been stumped plenty of times; I most certainly have. It is not a weakness; it is an opportunity to grow. So don’t feel as if you need to have all the answers. You do not have to be perfect, just humble. People will pick up on your honesty. They will realize that you are not out just to win an argument but that you really care about being a witness for your Faith.

I remember hearing from a young college girl who had never been formally catechized. Some Evangelical Protestant friends at school attacked her Catholic Faith. Not knowing how to answer, she wound up in tears. But the following Sunday she found Tim Staples’ CD Teen Apologetics in the Lighthouse Catholic Media kiosk in the back of her parish church. It had all the answers she was looking for! She went back to school on Monday empowered with solid, biblical responses to all of her friends’ objections.

Instead of losing her faith, like millions of other college kids, she started studying the Catechism and learning apologetics and got involved in a Catholic campus ministry to help others like her to know and defend their Faith. And it is all because she took the time to go find out.
